ZT works on a VM but doesn't on the host itself

ZeroTier isn’t working on my Ubuntu workstation - the connection to the peers is staying “direct” for a while, eventually it’s getting relayed, but no connectivity after all.
But a NAT’ed VM running on the very same workstation (also Ubuntu) enjoys a direct peer connection and operational connectivity…
When the host is connected to a 4g smartphone network, its ZT works flawlessly.

Host/VM OS: Ubuntu 21.10, Zerotier 1.8.6, OpenWRT on the router

Any hints how to further troubleshoot this issue?
