Zerotier there was error registering with firewall

Had zerotier 1.10 on win 10 pc, tried to upgrade to latest get error cannot register with firewall. Disable Kaspersky internet security, still same error. uninstall old zt reinstall yields same error

Hi JohnM,

but there are a few steps you can take to resolve it. Here’s what I recommend:

  1. Check Firewall Settings:
  • Even after disabling Kaspersky, it’s possible that some settings are still interfering. Make sure to check Kaspersky’s firewall settings to ensure ZeroTier is allowed through. Sometimes, you may need to add it as an exception manually.
  1. Run as Administrator:
  • When installing or updating ZeroTier, right-click the installer and select “Run as administrator.” This can help ensure that it has the necessary permissions to register with the firewall.
  1. Windows Firewall:
  • Make sure that Windows Firewall isn’t blocking ZeroTier. You can go to Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Defender Firewall > Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall and ensure that ZeroTier is allowed on both private and public networks.
  1. Clean Uninstall:
  • If you haven’t done so already, perform a clean uninstall of ZeroTier. This means:
    • Uninstall ZeroTier from the Control Panel.
    • Delete any residual ZeroTier files in C:\Program Files\ZeroTier\ or C:\ProgramData\ZeroTier\ (make sure to back up any configurations if needed).
    • Restart your PC.
    • Then, try reinstalling the latest version from the ZeroTier website.
  1. Update Network Drivers:
  • Sometimes outdated network drivers can cause issues. Ensure your network drivers are up to date by visiting the manufacturer’s website or using Windows Update.
  1. Check for Conflicting Software:
  • Other security or VPN software might conflict with ZeroTier. If you have any other security programs installed, try temporarily disabling them to see if that resolves the issue.
  1. Event Viewer Logs:
  • Check the Event Viewer for any logs related to ZeroTier or firewall registration. This might provide more insight into the specific issue.

If you’ve tried all these steps and still encounter issues, it might be worth reaching out again for further problem solvings.

Good luck, and let me know how it goes! ( hope it works now ^^)
