I have followed the instructions in this post however I am unable to ping either of the QNAPs. I was able to add to my Zerotier network so I see both of them in my.zerotier.com. I am able to ping as well as access smb shares of 2 PCs in my Zerotier network.
Both QNAPs have QTS 4.3.4.2814 installed. Both are confirmed online and are able to see my Zerotier network using CLI commands. This version of QTS is older so the QNAPs do not have QuFirewall. Under QNAP Security I have added a rule to allow the IPs of my Zerotier network 10.147.20.0/255.255.255.0
Not sure what else to try. I was debating if I should install TailScale or ZeroTier but I went this route because TailScale required QTS 5.0 and above. I’m not really sure if that would have made any difference or if it would be the same result but any help will be greatly appreciated.
Probably not the best solution for ZeroTier but I was able to get access to my smb shares remotely by installing TailScale. I got a version that was compatible with my QNAPs by adding the MyQNAP repo. It has TailScale version 1.86.2.0. After I installed it, I was able to log in my devices and everything worked just worked. For anyone else that needs to go this route make sure you have the QVPN service installed before installing TailScale. To access the SMB shares I found that typing in the path into file explorer directly did not work. I had to go through Mapping a network drive and used the following format:
\QNAP TailScale IP\Shared Folder
I also had to check “Connect using different credentials”
To be sure, I went back and tried this method using the ZeroTier IP but it didn’t work for either of the QNAPs. Again, not the best solution if you already have ZeroTier deployed but it’s a solution that worked for me since I think there might be some incompatibility with these old QNAPs on QTS 4.3.4. Hope this helps others.
